Fixing NFC iPhone Issues

1. Unlock your iPhone

Apple designed NFC to prevent the unintentional scanning or reading of an NFC tag. Hence, NFC will not work unless your iPhone is unlocked. Try unlocking your screen before scanning an NFC tag.

2. Remove your iPhone case

The case of an iPhone can sometimes act as a disruptive barrier between the NFC anntenna and the tag. To boost the signal strength, try removing the case temporarily before scanning an NFC tag.

3. Check your iPhone charge

It is known that NFC can stop working when the battery power on your iPhone is extremely low. Fully recharge your iPhone before scanning an NFC tag.

4. Close the iPhone camera app

The iPhone camera app, 3rd party apps, which use your camera, or Apple pay wallet can prevent NFC from working. Try closing these applications before scanning an NFC tag.

5. Reset your NFC with airplane mode

The iPhone NFC will not work when airplane mode is enabled so ensure that it is turned off. Another use of airplane mode is to reset your NFC when it glitches.

  1. Swipe down on the top right of your phone to display your control panel.
  2. Tap the Airplane mode button so it turns orange.
  3. Wait for 1 minute.
  4. Tap the Airplane mode button so it greyed out and disabled.

Try resetting your NFC by turning airplane mode on and off.

6. Know where your NFC antenna is located on your iPhone

On an iPhone, the NFC antenna is located on the back of the phone in the top left hand corner. Whereas on an Android or Samsung the NFC antenna is located on the back of the phone but towards the middle.

Point your iPhone at the NFC tag like a remote control. There is no need to touch the NFC tag because it can work from within a few inches above the tag.

Try positioning your NFC antenna directly at the tag.
